Emerging patterns of voting in England based on faith and belief identities : A research note

Greg Smith (William Temple Foundation)
Revised version July 2025

This is a fairly rough and ready paper, which has not been submitted to any academic journal for peer review,  because of the time that would take, the detailed painstaking work that is always needed for publication, the constraints on making such articles open access, and the fact that as a retired researcher I no longer have anything
to gain by adding to my portfolio of formally published papers.

ABSTRACT
The relationship between religious identity and voting patterns is a matter of considerable interest in  democratic societies across the world. In the UK in recent years it is possible to detect associations  between religious affiliation and voting patterns. In this article we use data from various surveys and polls (including the British Election Study), from the 2021 Census, results of the 2016 Brexit referendum and constituency results in the 2024 General election to explore these links. The article concludes with recommendations for more sophisticated research methods that would throw greater light on this important topic.
